Night and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas take place during the Holocaust. Night and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is located at or near a concentration camp in Auschwitz, Poland. The main characters, from Night and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, Elie and Bruno are two young boys. Both Bruno and Elie are affected by the Holocaust. Bruno and Elie are affected by the Holocaust mentally and physically because Elie faces the terror of losing family members, and are physically punished by the Nazis with a whip. Bruno is affected by the Holocaust because when Bruno’s friend, a Jewish captive, Shmuel, is punished by one the Nazis soldier, Lieutenant Kotler, he is angry at himself for having a friend get into trouble because he lied to Lieutenant Kotler. Bruno is physically affect by the Holocaust because he dies in the gas chambers. Bruno, Shmuel, and Elie are living their lives always ordered by the Nazis soldier (in Bruno’s case, his father), and yearn for freedom. Elie see’s his father being punished by a Nazis soldier and hesitate to defend his father, while Bruno hesitate and lies to Lieutenant Kotler. They both don’t want to get into trouble by the Nazis. Both the Jews and the German public are locked away from the outside world. One by the Nazis and one by the Propaganda.
Night is based on a true story written by Elie Wiesel. Elie is taken away from his home in Hungary to a concentration camp located in Auschwitz, Poland. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is a fictional story about a 8 year old boy, who moves from Berlin, Germany to Auschwitz, Poland. Night is written by someone who experienced the inside terror of the concentration camp who is fully aware of the Nazi’s doing, and the main character in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, Bruno, is unaware of the term “concentration camp” and refers the word concentration camp as a farm. Elie was born as a Jew while Bruno was born as a German. Elie gave a full perspective through the eyes of the Jews during the Holocaust. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas comes from the perspective of a German child during the Holocaust. Elie is trapped in the concentration camp while Bruno, and the German public is locked away from reality because Nazis uses propaganda to hide their deeds from the German public.
